Some thoughts about what worked for Steelhead run....
Race was on a Sunday
Started real Carb loading Thursday - Pasta for dinner Thursday and Friday. Pizza with chicken topping night before race. Fruity Pebbles Treats, Honey Chex cereal for snacks. Rice cakes. Eat all the carbs!
Drank Pedialyte on Saturday and a Gatorade. Hydrate on electrolytes!
Deep muscle massage including strip and split calves on Thursday. Give 2 days of recovery.
Epsom salt bath Friday. Hot soak to help loosen up muscles. I did run 5 miles 2 days before the race as per Paul's plan.
Brittney made Blueberry Muffins for the trip. I had 2 muffins and a banana with peanut butter before the race. Had another Gatorade before the race also,
Don't forget the Nitrous pills!!
Use the Alt Red during the race.
Maurten gel as soon as we start biking. another gel every 45-60 minutes of cycling. Infinit also but use those gels.
Keeping heart rate in check on bike! 115-120 HR. Good range. Don't watch speed, watch HR
Find a buddy! This is easier said than done. If you can make a friend like Maddy and talk through the run, it helps! If you can't, believe in yourself and the training. Watch HR to not blow up, but believe in your legs. They will hold up.
Pickle juice shots. Take one as soon as you start running. Another at hour 1. Have a 3rd ready if needed! Don't be afraid or skeptical to use it! Take it! Its worth it if it helps!
Stay hydrated! Drink all the drinks. Its a freaking race, use the caffeine!
Every 2-3 miles, hit a gel. Stay fueled!! Wanna keep running strong? Keep taking in calories with Maurten gels! Switch between non-caffeine and caffeine gels!
Short walk breaks are fine! If you need a short walk break, take it! Then get your butt in gear and run some more!
